Hi,
this sounds very strange.
Can you post your android version and the version of piratebox you are using? You can find the PirateBox version in "/opt/piratebox/version"

best wishes Matthias

Edit Files in Windows? And Shutting down?

Hi,
I was wondering if there is a way to add /delete files on the SD card via windows (not running in the Pi)? Sometimes its easier to work with files from a windows box. Also it can make it easier to the HTML files if your main box is Windows.

Also any clean way to shutdown? Maybe from the admin web interface?

Thanks
Dave

Sorry for delay...so I'm using the current custom image for raspberry pi thats linked in your raspberry pi tutorial, and I haven't tweaked anything. My android phone is running Android 4.1.2 and my tablet is running 4.1...it seems to do the same whatever browser I use on the android devices..dolphin, firefox, opera mini, and using different filemanagement apps (astro,my files, file manager) results in the same..so if I hit browse to upload files on the index page i get a window with a selection of apps to use to browse files and if I pick a file manager app it loads the app for a split second then kicks back to the index page if that makes sense.

But on the windows system it works, right .

Did you try a different file browser?

Sounds strange for me, but I believe you. ;)

I am trying to use your wheezy image 02-06 but when I put the properly imaged SD card in my rpi nothing happens. I've tried every way properly to install piratebox on my pi but I don't think that image works. I'm probably wrong but if you could give me some help that would be greatly appreciated

Ehm, what did you expect?
The howto describes your first steps, after booting a fresh image, like enabling piratebox for bootup :)

The main problem with piratebox on the pi

The main problem with running piratebox on the pi is that you have to use wireless usb adapters, Most usb and pcie cards for laptops are nowhere near as powerful as your wireless routers.

A typical off the shelf wifi router can do 100mw of tx power where the typical usb and pcie card can only do 31mw of tx power.

So you would need to either connect the pi to a wifi router via ethernet cable or find an AC powered usb dongle with at least 100mw otherwise no one will even see your raspberry piratebox.

Yes, but

Is wrong.

Normal routers have more antennas with results in better transmit and recieve conditions. The maximum Antenna-Output is regulated due to local laws. In Germany, we are talking about 100mW .. but that is the power including the dBi gain through a antenna- which is the important side fact.

And yes, the support for USB-wifi cards is mostly crap especially, if they need more power as the RPi can provide without an powered usb hub.

Setting up a Wifi-router + RPi isn't that difficult, so btw.

did you ever try to start hostapd manually and see what debug output brings up?

Obstructions and height of the transmitter are more important than power at these frequencies.

Of course Wi-Fi USB with external antenna will outperform dongle with internal antenna.

In U.S. maximum transmitter power is 1000mW (1W) but low power dongle will still work if users can see the Pi.

I measured this dongle + Pi out to 300m outdoors. RAV battery powered. Pi was about 1m off the ground. Transmit power is 17 dbm (0.05W):

Also this one, 250m outdoors:

Wi-Fi USB + Pi does not require a hub for power. I use 2A supply from Amazon, or RAVPower external battery with 2A output.

how did you flash your SD card with my image?

I haven't meant (re)starting the normal init.d process.

just
 sudo hostapd -dd /opt/piratebox/conf/hostapd.conf

I don't have my Raspberry Pi here, but the output seemed fine except those ioctl messages. My guess is that the driver doesn't support hostapd yet.

Which image link did you use?
Did you have an USB Wifi connected and "PROBE_INTERFACE" activated?
Which RPi do you have?
