Re: High dBi Raspberry pi build
Hi,
only increasing the output of the antenna is not enough to create a good network. You will shortly encounter the problem of the following picture
high-DBi Router shouts "HEY MY NAME IS..."
normal client, "oh, yeah. I want to join your network"
high-DBi Router "DID SOMEBODY SAY SOMETHING; HAVENT HEARD ANYTHONG::: HEY MY NAME IS..."
normal client "here me.."
high-DBi Router shouts "..HEY MY NAME IS..."
On a far distance, the normal client isn't strong enough to answer your high dbi antenna. That creates a bad user experience :(
Using additional router in a Repeater-Mode is a good option.
For using the ethernet port on your RPi, you need to do some additional changes, that it will work like in this howto [www.piratebox.cc]

Re: Changing USB drives?
It might just be different thumb drives. My PNY works fine. I even bought a new PNY and transferred the files, and the new one works fine as well. The others, Sandisk and Kingston, did not work.

WLAN does not come up in 99% of cases
Hello out there,
its now two days since I first tried to get the Piratebox running on my Pi B+.
Today in the morning I was able to connect to the box via WLAN but after rebooting the WLAN does not show up in my WiFi list (Computer, Tablet and Smartphone).
I use a RT5370 based WiFi stick (checked with lsusb). I also tried the hint from the FAQ with the Probe, but nothing happens.
When I connect my Pi to a screen I see that it boots and then stops at
wlan0: link becomes ready
I hope someone knows the problem. Because after reading through the forums I could not find a solution.
Thank you for your answers.

Unable to download torrent file.
Every time I try to download the torrent file it fails. Typically the browser keeps trying to connect until it times out and I get the browsers "This website is not available message"
Tried multiple browsers to find the same result.
Here's the link on the home page.

Any ideas?

Re: RaspberryPi with Realtek RTL8188 and custom hostapd
So far as I can tell, something in 3.18.7+ has screwed things up. None of the thousands of custom hostapd binaries for realtek now work with an RTL8188CUS. All I get at startup is
ioctl[SIOCSIWMODE]: Operation not permitted
Could not set interface to mode(3)!
Could not set interface to master mode!
rtl871xdrv driver initialization failed.

Edimax - EW-7711UAn does not work remove from list
found this on a raspberry forum.
It's a different manufacturer. The older Edimax EW7811UN is Realtek rtl8188cus (which works with the 8192cu driver). This new dongle has a MediaTek chipset and unluckily there's no driver built in to the stock kernel for that WiFi device. I had a look in the 3.18.1 kernel source tree and there isn't even an unconfigured driver for it.

Re: Pi(rate) box on Pi2B
Any progress on creating a new image? I am not sure if this will work, but I am going to follow the manual install instructions and attempt to create a working image for the Raspberry Pi 2. I would really love to be able to bring my Rpi2 with me on trips. I use piratebox on a RpiB to wirelessly share files from an external hd to my ipad/iphones/laptop on the road.

Cannot download or upload PDFs
I just setup the latest image of PirateBox for RPI. Everything is great except that I primarily need it to serve PDFs and it doesn't seem to be doing this.
From an Adroid tablet, when I attempt to download a PDF (previously scp'd into the /opt/piratebox/www/Shared directory), I get redirected to the Piratebox front page. If I attempt to upload a pdf and browse to the file, the file does not appear and the Browse button becomes greyed out - it reappears usable if I refresh.
I can upload pics no problem. But I do seem to have the same issue with PirateBox on a TP MR3040. Odd, it seems like a lot of people use it for this.

Re: Cannot download or upload PDFs
Hi,
this is usually a permission issue, because I assume you scp'ed it via root.
you can do two things to fix that:
1. Rerun the first init-script
2. or change the permissions with that command:
After that, the download should work.

Re: RaspberryPI USB wifi compatibility list
I've just set mine up and it appears to be working fine with no extra setup. I'm using a TP_LINK TL_WDN3200 with a B+.
