Raspberry Pi(rate) Box vs. WRT Pirate Box

Hello,
I've got a spare Raspberry Pi but an old version B with 256Mb and also a TP-Link MR3040 that I barely use.

What would be the pro and cons of each solutions ? Is there one that you would recommand over another ?

RPi solution - pro
* more powerful solution (transfer speeds and simultanly users)
* More flexible and easier to extend (with Linux skills)
* In case of problem, just exchange the SD Card (even for different purposes)

RPi solution - contra
* Bad USB-chipset support (some wifi dongles aren't working properly or need more work to get them working)
* Some USB wifi dongles need additional power source
* less portable
* bit more complicated to setup

OpenWRT MR3040 - pro
* easy to setup
* AR71xx based, like MR30xx: sufficant for the most cases
* MR3040 only included battery with lifetime for around 6 hours

OpenWRT MR3040 - contra
* AR71xx based, like MR30xx: bad I/O perfomance for simultanly accessing users
* hard to extend with other software setup
* not so easy to customize
* Reflash can brick the device unrepairly (quite rare, but can be hard to repair anyway)
* No easy multi purpose usage

That are the things which came to my mind quickly.
BTW: I'm using the tiny 256MB device for testing and that is sufficient in most cases.

I've had the TL-MR3040 for a day and a half now, I'm considering buying a Raspberry Pi instead due to all the issues I have with it...

To add to the pile, here's some more cons on the TP-Link MR3040:
- Must format storage & install drive with FAT32 (No files larger than 4GB, 2TB disk size limit)
- Even while plugged in, you can drain the battery if you plug in a HDD or other thirsty device
- Pain in the ass to get internet access on the device, makes it really difficult to add packages (samba, afp, nfs, etc.)
- Limited wireless range due to internal antenna design
- DLNA maxes out CPU when lots of files or simultaneous users
- Slow upload over HTTP is *awful*, peaks at 1MB/s. Even SCP transfer is, at best, 1MB/s. That's atrocious, especially when you're trying to attract people to the platform!

Thanks for the answers. Regarding to your experiences, I'll try with the RasPi first. My MR3040 could still be useful for traveling, even if the WiFi to WiFi function is hard to get working most of the time (but that's another story).

3.14rate box setup issues

Yo, I'm new, and I'm also having problems with setting up piratebox on one of my raspis.

I tried to give it a go on the older 256/B pi, but when I start piratebox it just seems to crash, and I can't connect to the wifi adapter. Using the 512/B model, it seems to work.

Is it just the case that piratebox doesn't work on the 256 models?

Rasperry WiFi wont work after restart and won't find any external HDD’s or Flash Drives

Hi all

Need some help.

I've installed the Archlinux to the sd card. Once I do the remove Ethernet cable and power it down then on again the WiFi will not start so my thinking is PirateBox isnt starting itself up. I did the command “systemctl enable piratebox”

Also I can never get the HDD or flash drive to work. I'm not to familiar with Linux but was able to follow the guide.

Any help would be great.

Thanks Cretten

HI,
in this case run the following command exactly, after that the PirateBox init.d script waits until the USB-Wifi is ready:

sed -i 's|PROBE_INTERFACE="no"|PROBE_INTERFACE="yes"|g' /opt/piratebox/conf/piratebox.conf

Then the next reboot it should work.

About the usage of an external drive: We still need a very easy howto to make this working. Sorry, we are not done with the todo list.

Hi,
I assume it depends on the wifi adapter and it's power usage.
I'm using a 256MB model for testing, so this can't be the issue. Didi you try to use the Pi with an additional powered USB hub?

Well the wifi adapter is the TL-WN722N, one of the recommended adapters. And the only other things I have attached is the USB storage (just a stick) and the power. Nothing else is attached.

Obviously it's not a big issue, as the other one works fine, I was just wondering if anyone knew what the problem was.

WiFi AP with Edimax EW-7811Un

Heyho!

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but:

I (accidentally) bought an Edimax EW-7811Un instead of the EW-7711UAn listed in the compatibility list. I went through a lot and nearly gave up on it, BUT: I got it to work, finally!

I mainly followed this Tutorial, but compiled the much newer version of the hostapd/driver from source. The link is included in the tutorial, somewhere in the hostapd part. You need the right chipset of course, the realtek site is rather...confusing.

The important part after that is to prevent the hostapd from being updated, we can do this by modifying (or creating) /etc/pacman.conf and adding
IgnorePkg=hostapd
as described here.

My hostapd.conf looks something like this (sorry for the stuff in there, some testing):
interface=wlan0
#driver=rtl8192cu
driver=rtl871xdrv
#driver=nl80211
#################
ssid=PirateBox - Share Freely
channel=1
#wmm_enabled=0
#wpa=1
#wpa_passphrase=ConroyPi
#wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
#wpa_pairwise=TKIP
#rsn_pairwise=CCMP
#auth_algs=1
macaddr_acl=0
##########
#hw_mode=g
#channel=1
#auth_algs=1
#ieee80211n=1
The important part is the driver. I don't think we need to bridge the interfaces (and it's not as simple in arch as in other distributions?), but enlighten me on this one if I'm wrong.

I still need to see if I can tweak anything, but with this setup I get a speed from RPi->Laptop of 600KB/s as reported by wget when downloading a shared file.

So, back to the beginning: I don't know if this is the right place, but I think we can add the EW-7811Un to the list of compatible WiFi dongles. It's damn small, doesn't need a powered hub in my current setup and works somewhat well.

I hope this helps anyone going through the same issues.

Fresh Piratebox.. PirateBox Service start fails

Hello Everyone!
I've just created my first piratebox on my B Model,
using a 16GB SD Card, booted fine (had my usb-wifi adapter and the flash drive attached) and ssh'd to it.. chaning the root password worked fine as well but starting the PirateBox service failed.

tl;dr: first boot, PirateBox service fails to start.

Any suggestions?

Try these:

systemctl stop piratebox
systemctl start piratebox
systemctl status piratebox.service

Should print some output (at least the last one) - what does it give you?

wow, thanks for the quick support here!

bollocks.. I assume that means my wireless adapter is not supported, correct? (I'm using a TP-Link TL-WN725N WLAN Nano USB-Adapter)

Well, at least it's not recognized, but there's still a chance! :D
Please try these:
ifconfig
lsusb

Unplug your wifi dongle, wait a few seconds and plug it back in, then check:
dmesg | tail

generally, you might find something on google regarding that dongle and RPi, the RPi community also put up a huge list of wifi dongles on their wiki, maybe it says something about this specific one ;-)

I'd still have an Alfa AWUS036NHR v2 lying around and a friend of mine would still have my TP-Link TL-WN822N.. but the nano adpater attached would be perfect due to its size :P

So it's best to use some google-fu to hopefully get it working.. I assume I have to look for solutions for Arch?

Important EDIT: Try rebooting. When I plug my dongle, it's not recognized as a network interface, rebooting helps.
Do a nice reboot, like
reboot
;-)

Original post:

Well yes, solutions for Arch would be best, but Arch is not that commonly used...

So, the important bit is the chipset, which is RTL8188EUS in your case. That's kind of unlucky, because the old version of your dongle used another chipset, for which drivers are somewhat in range. However try something like this:

http://blog.pi3g.com/2013/05/tp-link-tl-wn725n-nano-wifi-adapter-v2-0-raspberry-pi-driver/
or
http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=29752

or search:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Raspberry+Pi+RTL8188EUS+TL-WN725N

or, if these don't work out, search for something else - I though about buying that exact dongle a few days ago, please let me know if you figure it out :D

Best luck!

WLAN with D-Link DWA-131

Hello,

Today I've setup PiratBox on my Raspberry Pi. I have a D-Link DWA-131 and it was not working initially.

The following did the trick:
1) I changed the driver in /opt/piratebox/conf/hostapd to "rtl871xdrv"
2) Then I replaced the hostapd:
Language: PHP
wget http://www.adafruit.com/downloads/adafruit_hostapd.zip unzip adafruit_hostapd.zip sudo mv /usr/sbin/hostapd /usr/sbin/hostapd.ORIG sudo mv hostapd /usr/sbin sudo chmod 755 /usr/sbin/hostapd
(source: http://www.maketecheasier.com/set-up-raspberry-pi-as-wireless-access-point/)

Cheers
bzu

* Edited by Darts...added code brackets so that the commands and URL display properly. See this post for more info.
