There are 2 partitions on the SD card, Ubuntu for example mounts both as default.
The www directory is in the 2GB partition and my suggestion is to edit the files directly on the SD card (or make a working copy, of course) and then plug it back to the RPi.
1. Plug the SD card into your laptop
2. Let Linux mount both partitions
3. Open the larger partition
4. Edit contents of the www directory
