Using osx I can't see that other partition with the www directory in, but I followed these instructions and ended up doing it directly in piratebox, using nano to edit the html and config files and copying image files to and from the www/Shared folder and the usb. It was probably better this way as I had to learn a bit of command line to navigate etc (but took much longer!)
Logging in as alarm didn't give me permissions to change files, I had to be logged into as root (pw: root) instead of alarm, that let me do whatever I wanted.
